Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)

Formerly known as Operation Restore Trust (ORT), Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is a program dedicated to preparing and educating seniors about the risk of Medicare/Medicaid fraud. The SMP project is a partnership between the Federal Government and New York State agencies to fight fraud and abuse in the health care system. SMP encourages beneficiaries to report
suspected cases of health care fraud and aims to maximize resources in fighting fraud.

Every year, Medicare/Medicaid loses billions of dollars to fraud. Not only does this undermine the healthcare system, but it also compromises quality care that is important to your family.

SMP offers seniors a range of information about healthcare fraud, such as, ways seniors can protect themselves, what the common fraudulent practices are, and tips for fighting fraud. The program teaches seniors to “guard their card” and protect their Medicare/Medicaid information by not feeling pressured to buy unnecessary products, giving out their personal card numbers, and never letting anyone look at medical records and prescription medication unless authorized by a physician.

The Greater Buffalo Chapter is also calling on seniors who would be willing to
volunteer some free time to talk to others about SMP and what it has to offer. The Chapter is looking for out-going people who are at ease with speaking publicly about SMP and teaching its importance in regards to healthcare fraud.

For more information, contact the American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter at (716) 878-2351. Volunteers are welcome to sign-up now!
