I'm OK

While some seniors living alone in apartment complexes can manage everyday chores, they still like to know that someone is watching out for them. Through the I’M OK Program, residents of senior apartment buildings look out for one another. By checking for door tags each morning, neighbors can call for help in case of an overnight emergency.

Each participant receives an I’M OK tag. First thing in the morning, the tag gets placed on the doorknob with the letters I’M OK facing out. At a predetermined time each morning, a designated hall monitor turns the tag around.

Later in the day, the participating senior takes the tag in for use the next morning. If the hall monitor does not see the tag, help will be summoned.

Is the program working? To date, two saves have been reported at Jill Joseph Tower, located at 66 Custer St. in Buffalo.

In one case, a resident fell and was taken by emergency squad to the hospital. She has been able to return to her apartment and now uses a walker. In a separate incident, another resident fell three different times. She was assisted each time through the I’M OK program and still lives in the building.

The I’M OK program has been in operation for more than 25 years and has served more than 5,000 seniors in 35 different sites. For more information, please call 878-2385.
