During this first National CPR/AED Awareness Week, June 1-7, 2008, the American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter encourages everyone to learn these important skills that could someday save a life.“The Red Cross wants the public to know that everyone has the power to save a life. At least one person in every household and on every office floor should be trained and certified in first aid and CPR/AED,” says Nancy M. Blaschak, Greater Buffalo Chapter executive director. “On average, it takes emergency personnel 10 minutes to arrive on scene. For someone who is choking or has stopped breathing, that may be too late. By learning simple rescue skills, you can go from being a helpless bystander to a person with the ability to take control and help someone during an emergency.” Sherry Cole, an American Red Cross instructor, is thankful everyday she became CPR certified. She didn’t think she would ever need to use the skills she learned until her daughter, Kassandra, was struck by a vehicle. Her ability to perform CPR saved Kassandra’s life. “Those few precious moments, a matter of three or four minutes, made the difference in Kassandra’s ultimate recovery,” Cole said. “Had I not kept her circulation going, and oxygen flowing, she would have had brain damage.” Help the Greater Buffalo Chapter accomplish a nationwide goal of reaching 250,000 people with lifesaving information during this week. “During the month of June, we’re offering a 10 percent discount to anyone who registers to take an on-line course,” Blaschak said. “Anyone who thinks he or she does not have the time to take a class should check it out!” For more information or to register for a class, call (716) 878-2387 The American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter prepares for, and responds to, community disasters and emergencies and helps people lead safe and healthy lives. The American Red Cross is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-driven organizations in the United States and locally depends on the contributions of 1,000 volunteers to provide its emergency service and health education programs. |
