Stay Safe During March Storm

Red Cross tips for snow, flooding

As a March storm threatens to bring rain, sleet and snow to the Northeast over the next few days, area residents are encouraged to prepare for wintry weather and possible flooding. Basic information and a few simple procedures can make all the difference in keeping you out of harm’s way. With the possibility of both large amounts of snow and flooding occurring on already damp ground, American Red Cross tips can help ensure you and your family safely weather this potential St. Patrick’s Day storm.
Follow these American Red Cross Safety Tips:

Winter weather
·          Be ready with an EMERGENCY SUPPLIES KIT:
-First aid kit and essential medications.
-Battery-powered NOAA Weather radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
-Canned food and can opener.
-Bottled water (at least one gallon of water per person per day to last at least 3 days).

·          If experts indicate severe weather could be headed your way, stay updated on conditions. Check TV and radio reports regularly. Know the difference between a winter storm watch and a winter storm warning. A storm WATCH
means that winter weather is possible in your area. A storm WARNING means a winter storm is headed you way. A blizzard warning indicates strong winds, blinding wind-driven snow and dangerous wind chill are expected and you should seek shelter immediately.

Flooding

·          SUPPLY YOUR EMERGENCY KIT WITH the items listed above. Store important family documents (wills, passports, insurance policies, deeds, etc.) in a portable, waterproof and fireproof container as part of your kit.

·          MAKE A PLAN so you know where to go if you need to evacuate. Plan ahead for the possibility of becoming separated from your loved ones by choosing an out-of-town contact that each person can contact should a disaster occur. Plan on using the Red Cross Safe and Well web site, accessible through http://redcross.org.

·          STAY INFORMED: KNOW WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING TO OCCUR

When a Flood WATCH Is Issued Move your furniture and valuables to higher floors of your home. Fill your car's gas tank, in case an evacuation notice is issued.

When a Flood WARNING Is Issued listen to local radio and TV stations for information and advice. If told to evacuate, do so as soon as possible. Be alert to signs of flash flooding and be ready to evacuate on a moment's notice.

When a Flash Flood WARNING Is Issuedor if you think it has already started, evacuate immediately. You may have only seconds to escape. Act quickly! Move to higher ground. Do not drive around barricades. If your car stalls in rapidly rising waters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. If you experience flooding and need help, call your local authorities immediately.
