The community chapters, including Niagara Falls, Eastern Niagara County, Orleans County, Genesee County, Wyoming County, Chautauqua County, and Allegany County, will be working with the Greater Buffalo Chapter, which has a service center in Olean, to enhance and strengthen the delivery of American Red Cross services across the eight county region of Western New York. Currently the eight chapters serve a population of 1.6 million people. They provide disaster services, health & safety training programs and a wide variety of services through the work of 7,063 volunteers and 131 employees. “This is a great opportunity for the Greater Buffalo Chapter to work with community chapter executives and boards and, collectively, allow us to most effectively help the people in our cities and towns,” Nancy Blaschak, executive director of the Greater Buffalo Chapter, said. “With this new structuring, we’ll be able to draw upon the unique abilities of each chapter while maintaining the grass roots strengths that are so important to the way we serve our communities,” she added. Additionally the Greater Buffalo, Chautauqua and Genesee County Chapters each have been named one of 80 best-performing chapters in the United States by the national American Red Cross, out of a total of 805 chapters that were evaluated in fiscal year 2006. To achieve this outstanding designation, the chapters were scored on a comprehensive set of performance criteria through the Red Cross Chapter Performance Standards system. The Chautauqua County Chapter is located in Jamestown and has a branch in Dunkirk. Vincent Horrigan serves as the chapter’s executive director. The Genesee County Chapter is located in Batavia, N.Y. Judith Nagel serves as executive director of the chapter. “This is an outstanding achievement for each of our chapters,” Blaschak said. “Being awarded this distinction is the direct result of the hard work of all our employees and volunteers, including the members or our local boards, and would not have been possible without the support of the members of our communities.” The America Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter prepares for, and responds to, community disasters and emergencies and helps people lead safe and healthy lives. The American Red Cross is one of the oldest and largest volunteer driven organizations in the United States and locally depends on the contributions of more than 1,000 volunteers to provide its emergency services and health education programs. The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work. |
