Stay Safe from Flood Dangers

BUFFALO, N.Y.-- June 27, 2006 –As communities around the Northeast cope with extensive rainfall, the potential for flooding is growing in many areas. The American Red Cross is helping impacted communities in Pennsylvania and New York and will continue to provide vital disaster response assistance to people in need of shelter and support.

The American Red Cross reminds residents in high risk areas to stay current on conditions, checking media reports regularly for updated information. Call your local authorities if you experience flooding. “Remember, a flood WARNING means a flood is imminent or is happening in the area”, according to Nancy M. Blaschak, executive director, Greater Buffalo Chapter. “If you have to evacuate, follow the recommended routes. Shortcuts or alternate roads may be blocked or damaged by flood waters. Most flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water, or people playing in high water, especially if the waters are moving. Turn around and go another way. Take time to gather together the vital supplies you many need, too.”

Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit Containing--

* First aid kit and essential medications.

* Ready to eat food.

* At least three gallons of water per person

* Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags.

* Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.

* Written instructions for how to turn off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn them back on.)

* Identified safe places where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose several places . . . a friend's home in another town, a motel, or a shelter.

* Special needs items for babies or the elderly.

The American Red Cross will continue to work with families and individuals to support their immediate emergency needs. Please call your local chapter for more information.

The Greater Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross prepares for, and responds to, community disasters and emergencies and helps people lead safe and healthy lives. The American Red Cross is one of the oldest and largest volunteer driven organizations in the United States and locally depends on the contributions of 1,000 volunteers to provide its emergency service and health education programs.

All American Red Cross disaster relief is free, made possible by voluntary donations for time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of this flooding and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide food, shelter, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O.
